Acne is an inflammatory skin condition that most commonly affects the face, neck and back. Acne may appear as blackheads, whiteheads, pimples or spots. When the follicle becomes filled with oil, dead cells, and bacteria, it often swells and ruptures causing the debris to escape into dermis.
The debris is irritating, and causes an inflammation. White blood cells rush into fight against the bacteria and create pus, a sticky, yellowish secretion. This is the beginning of a pimple and it appears as an inflamed, red lump.
Acne is often associated with teenagers or women entering menopause due to hormonal changes that occur within the body at these times. Acne can be hormonal, but is more often due to pores becoming clogged with debris consisting of excess sebum and dead skin cells.
The blocked pore will usually appear as a blackhead, unless infection has set in, in which case they will appear as whiteheads or pimples. Picking, squeezing, or touching the pimples is very tempting, although should be avoided as this can cause further inflammation and contribute to the spreading of the infection to healthy pores exaggerating the condition.
Untreated acne, or acne that has been severely disrupted through picking may lead to permanent scarring. Thankfully, acne can be successfully managed by way of deep cleansing, exfoliation, some mild to moderate peels (depending on the severity of the condition), and a recommended skincare regime.
