PRP Treatment for Hair Growth
Platelet Rich Plasma or PRP is a well known treatment of facial rejuvenation. Can it also be used as a hair growth treatment?
The answer is, Yes. Â PRP has emerged as a promising treatment for hair loss, particularly for conditions like androgenetic alopecia (AGA). This therapy utilizes the patient’s own blood, which is processed to concentrate the platelets that contain growth factors crucial for tissue regeneration and healing.
PRP is done by taking a small volume of blood from the patient. The blood is then spinned to separate the components. Spinning the blood will give a plasma that is rich in platelets.
PRP stimulate the dermal papilla cells on the scalp, which are essential for hair follicle health and growth. The growth factors released from activated platelets promote cell proliferation, angiogenesis (formation of new blood vessels), and prolongation of the anagen phase (the active growth phase) of hair follicles
Key growth factors involved include:
- Platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF)
- Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)
- Epidermal growth factor (EGF)
- Insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1)
These factors collectively enhance blood supply to hair follicles and may protect them from premature shedding.
PRP can significantly improve hair density and thickness. PRP is safe as it uses your own blood. Generally, PRP can be done monthly to increase hair growth.
