As we age, our face starts to lose volume. This is a perfectly normal part of the ageing process, but can be unwanted. Dermal fillers help to temporarily restore the areas affected by loss of volume. Most dermal fillers contain hyaluronic acid which is naturally present in our skin. Hyaluronic acid has replaced older collagen based products as it has a shorter period of recovery, gives better results and has considerably fewer adverse reactions.
Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance in the body found in the soft connective tissues. It keeps the skin and tissues hydrated and firm. This substance has been isolated by scientists and processed into a gel formulation. When this gel is injected, it acts like a cushion to provide support to facial structures and tissues that may have lost volume or elasticity due to aging. Hyaluronic acid binds water molecules and therefore encourages these water molecules to be brought to the skin’s surface keeping it hydrated, supple and looking fresh.
Algeness® is another range of dermal filler. It is made from purified agarose, a natural derivative of seaweed. Unlike the hyaluronic acid based fillers, the Algeness® filler does not attract water. For the patient, this means less swelling and bruising following the treatment.
