Do your jowls make you look sad and tired? Perhaps you’re concerned about the sagging and drooping of your face or an increasingly prominent ‘turkey neck’? Have you lost the definition in your jawline and neck? Does any of these symptoms concern you? Saggy Face? Ageing Face? Droopy Skin? Droopy Face? Loss of Volume? Sunken Face? Heavy Face? Neck Lift? Double Chin? Turtle Neck?
We are most aware of ageing around the eye, the ears, nose and mouth. The facial skin loses elasticity and starts to droop, whilst the soft tissues (fat and muscle) hollow and the bone itself begins to resorb. The face loses it original youthful appearance, the earlobes and nose tip lengthen, and the lips become thin. As we age the collagen and elastin in our skin begins to depreciate.
These naturally derived proteins are responsible for ensuring our skin stays plump and firm, and this depreciation leads to a loss of elasticity causing the skin to start to sag. Lifestyle and environmental factors can also act to accelerate the loss of facial volume. Smoking reduces blood flow to the skin, and toxins within cigarettes and nicotine products also contribute to reduced production of collagen. Dieting and exercise intended to result in fat loss also affects fat levels on the face leaving behind a less volumised facial appearance, that is often associated with youth.
A facelift procedure aims to rejuvenate the appearance of the facial area and restore a more youthful and rejuvenated facial appearance. The procedure involves tightening both the covering skin and the underlying muscle, called the platysma, and removing surplus skin from around the ears.
Generally a facelift procedure typically takes place under general anaesthetic and takes between 1-3 hours. More complicated and extensive procedures can occasionally take longer. Incisions are made behind and in front of the ears in order to minimize and hide scarring. In some cases, the incisions extend onto the scalp.
From there the surgeon will reach into the deeper layers of the face in order to reposition and lift the skin and soft tissues of the face, and restore the underlying facial muscles into a rejuvenated position. These muscles can also be tightened, and liposuction to the neck may also be performed to enhance the effect of the facelift.
As we age, the skin loses its elasticity becoming more prone to sagging, losing tone and developing lines. This is most obvious on the face and neck and many people decide to have a facelift to improve their appearance in their middle and later years. Most common causes are:
