Open Pores

Open pores are a common concern related to skin health. They are tiny openings on the skin that allow it to breathe and are essential for maintaining healthy skin. Factors that contribute to the appearance of large-looking open pores include high levels of oil production. Overactive sebaceous glands can cause excess oil, which can clog pores and make them appear larger.

We have reduced elasticity around pores because as we age the skin’s elasticity decreases. Thicker hair follicles and a decrease of collagen on the skin can make pores appear larger. Sun damage can cause the skin to lose collagen, making pores appear more prominent.

While it’s a misconception that pores can be “opened” or “closed,” there are ways to improve their appearance. Treatments to reduce the look of open pores include laser treatment and facials. Regular exfoliation is needed to remove oil and debris that clog pores.

Additionally, using topical retinoids, exfoliating regularly, and treating acne with salicylic acid can help minimize the appearance of pores. Protecting the skin from sun damage with sunscreen, using non-comedogenic products, and being gentle with the skin are also crucial steps in managing open pores.

In essence, while you can’t change the size of your pores, adopting a proactive skincare routine that includes cleansing, exfoliation, sun protection, and the use of suitable products can help reduce the appearance of open pores and promote healthier skin.
