Neck Lines

Neck lines, also known as platysmal bands or “turkey neck”, are a common sign of aging that occurs when the skin and underlying muscles in the neck area begin to lose elasticity and sag.

This is caused by a combination of factors, including natural collagen and elastin breakdown over time, sun damage, and repetitive motions like constantly looking down at a phone (“tech neck”).

As the skin’s foundation weakens and the neck muscles constrict, deep horizontal creases and folds start to form across the neck.

The appearance of neck lines can vary greatly from person to person. Some people may develop just a few subtle wrinkles, while others experience more pronounced, band-like creases that create a “turkey neck” look.

The severity of neck lines is often exacerbated by significant weight loss, which can cause the skin to become even more lax and loose. Beyond the aesthetic concerns, prominent neck lines can also make some individuals feel self-conscious or prematurely aged.

For those bothered by their neck lines, there are both surgical and non-surgical treatment options available. Surgical procedures like facelifts and neck lifts can effectively tighten and smooth the neck area, providing long-lasting results.

However, many people opt to try non-invasive solutions first, such as using topical retinoids and antioxidants to stimulate collagen production, performing neck exercises to strengthen the muscles, or undergoing skin resurfacing treatments like chemical peels and laser therapy. Injectable treatments like dermal fillers can also help temporarily minimize the appearance of neck lines.
